Let me guess: you’re excited for family pictures, but also… a little nervous? Maybe even dreading being in front of the camera? You’re not alone. Most of the families I work with come in with one big question: “What if we’re awkward in our photos?”
I totally get it. Last spring, a mom reached out with that exact concern. She was really focused on getting that classic everyone-smiling-at-the-camera shot for the holiday card. She even told me her toddler wasn’t exactly interested in cooperating at home, so how on earth would photos work?

The thing is, we got that perfect shot. But more than that, she walked away loving the candid photos of her family running through a field, holding hands, wild hair and all. She saw her family feeling joy – and that was everything.

If you’re worried you’ll feel stiff or unsure during your session, let me walk you through how we actually make the magic happen.
Let’s just put this out there: posing is overrated. I mean, try telling a 2-year-old to sit still and smile. It’s just not going to happen. If you’ve got small kids, you already know this. And honestly? That’s not a problem – it’s the point.
I don’t expect anyone to know where to put their hands or how to “pose” – let alone a toddler! Real family photos aren’t about perfect posture. They’re about connection. About capturing the way your little one snuggles into your chest when they need a moment (or a snack). Or the way your partner scoops your toddler up and spins just to get a giggle.

These are the moments worth remembering – and they don’t need instructions.
Here’s how we gently guide families through a photo session that feels natural, relaxed, and maybe even fun.
The biggest tip I give families before and during a session is simple: keep moving.
This works because when you’re interacting with your actual people – through touch, movement, and laughter – you feel like yourself. And that shows.

Don’t know what to do with your hands? Put them on someone you love.
That sounds silly, I know, but it’s the most natural thing in the world. Wrap your arm around your partner. Hold your child’s hand. Rub their back. Lean your head on someone’s shoulder. When everyone’s connected physically, it shifts the dynamic from “posing” to “loving.”
That’s always going to feel better (and look better).

There’s a mindset shift I love to remind parents about: pictures are not videos.
That means if your child is whining, stomping around, making silly faces – that’s okay. We’re not recording their tantrum, we’re capturing the way YOU look at them anyway. We’re showing the love and patience and snuggles in between.
And trust me: those tiny chaotic moments often turn into incredibly sweet photos.

No scolding, no pointing at the camera, no pressure. You don’t have to get everyone to smile (that’s my job), and I promise we’ll get that holiday card shot with everyone looking.

When families look back at their galleries, I want them to feel something. Not just “we looked nice,” but “wow, I remember how he laughed when we played tag,” or “she really was that little in my arms.”
That’s the beauty of ditching the stiff poses – we make space for real emotion. I’ve seen so many moms come in anxious, only to leave surprised at how much they enjoyed the session… and pleasantly shocked by how good they looked by simply being present with their kids.
If you’re in the East Bay and worried about feeling awkward in your family photos, I promise you: you’re not alone. And you’re not actually awkward. You’re just human.
Make your next photo session one that brings out the joy, the giggles, and the love that’s already there in your family. I’ll guide you every step of the way.
You bring the chaos. I’ll bring the calm (and the camera).
