Welcoming a baby is such a powerful, vulnerable season. And when it comes to documenting that transformation, sometimes less really is more.
There’s a quiet, confident kind of magic in a clean white backdrop, soft lighting, and a mother standing simply as she is. No flower crowns, no flashy gowns, no distractions – just her, and the life she’s carrying. Minimalist maternity photography isn’t about stripping anything away (in fact you can still create a unique sessions with different colored backdrops and injecting your own style).
If you’re considering maternity portraits but feeling unsure about what you want – or what style you’ll still love in 10 years – you’re not alone. So many of the moms I work with are nervous about being in front of the camera in the first place. Our bodies are changing. Our energy is worn thin. And the idea of “performing” for a camera with bright lights might feel more overwhelming than exciting.
That’s exactly where a minimalist studio session can be so powerful.

There’s something grounding about walking into a space where everything – the wardrobe, the set, the lighting – is simplified, softened, and intentional. We’re not racing around a park chasing golden hour or fussing with props or layers of styling. It’s calm. It’s slow. It’s built around you.
When all the extras are stripped away, what remains is what matters most: you and your story of becoming.
I still love my cozy boho setup with its neutral colors and earthy textures, and it photographs beautifully. But as trends shift, I’ve noticed that softer, more stylized looks that were everywhere five years ago are already starting to feel tied to that era. Minimalism, by contrast, doesn’t tie itself to trends.
A simple, stripped down aesthetic ages with grace. It’s artful, subtle, and universal – the kind of photo you’ll still want on your walls in 20 years.
When there’s no set to design or props to arrange, my entire focus turns to you. Every angle of your arms, the way your robe falls, the turn of your face – I have space to slow down and fine-tune every detail. This is especially helpful if you’re a little nervous or feeling vulnerable.

Sometimes we start by closing your eyes. I guide you through thinking about your baby – their name, their tiny toes, their newborn smell – and that connection shows up in your expression without you trying. Then from there, we adjust slowly: hands soft on your belly, shoulders relaxed, a little shift in how the light hits your face.
No posing experience needed. I will guide you through it all.
Recently, I worked with a mom on a two-part series – her maternity session when she was pregnant, and another after baby arrived. Both were done in studio, both using the exact same minimalist formula: white backdrop, white wardrobe, soft light, simple poses. I can’t overstate what a timeless and powerful outcome it created. Her second session, holding her new baby in the same outfit just weeks later, felt like part two of the same artwork. It wasn’t just beautiful – it was a story across time.

The result? A gorgeous paired series that moves emotionally from anticipation to connection. Those subtle changes – how you hold your belly one month and your baby the next – feel monumental when everything else remains the same.
So many moms worry about what to wear for studio maternity photos, especially when dressing a postpartum or third-trimester body that feels unfamiliar. In my client wardrobe, I stock soft, flattering options that work beautifully for minimalist sessions: white button-downs, lace kimonos, relaxed slip dresses. These pieces are designed to flow with you and photograph like a dream.

And the best part is, you don’t need to put together a full outfit. Often, the most powerful photos are with that simple linen shirt draped open to show your bump or baby. Soft, strong, natural.
Pregnancy can make us feel anything but graceful. The aches, the swelling, the bodily changes we didn’t expect – they’re real, and they can weigh heavy on the way we see ourselves. But at the heart of all that messiness, there is something breathtaking happening. You are growing a human. You are already mothering. And that deserves to be seen.

Minimalist maternity photography lets us strip away the distractions and center you in that truth. It’s not about pretending or staging or posing perfectly. It’s about witnessing this moment in all its quiet power.
When you walk away from a minimalist session, my hope is that you not only love how you look, but how you felt – calm, cared for, seen.
If you’re expecting and are drawn to something timeless, quiet, and real for your maternity photos, I’d love to welcome you into my Concord, CA studio.
