If you’re an expecting mom googling “when should I schedule newborn photos?” at 3am after your third nightly trip to the bathroom, I see you. It’s not exactly in the baby books, and let’s be honest, your OB isn’t handing out a pamphlet on studio lighting and sleepy poses. But as a photographer (and a mom who has navigated those hazy first few weeks), I want to offer a little guidance that might take one more thing off your mental load.
A few weeks ago, I had two newborns in my studio in the same week. Two different babies, two families, and each story was completely unique – just like the babies themselves. One family reached out early in pregnancy, got their baby in at just 10 days old, and we had the dreamiest, sleepiest session. Another baby came in around the 3-week mark and was cluster feeding like it was her job (because technically, it was). The pictures still turned out beautifully, but I could feel her mom start to worry. Are we going to get what we need? Will we have anything? At one point she looked up at me and asked, “will there be even one?!”
Spoiler: her final gallery was full of cuteness and love.
But the experience can be really different depending on when you’re able to get in. Let’s talk about why that 1-2 week window is such a sweet spot – and how booking within that timeframe helps not just your baby but you, too.
I know that planning something like a photo session during pregnancy can feel a bit abstract. Between tracking kicks, prepping a nursery, and just managing the wild journey of growing a tiny human, it’s no wonder that many families wait to book until baby is already here. Totally understandable. But here’s why getting on the calendar earlier – ideally for that 7-14 day postpartum window – makes everything easier, especially for you, Mom.
At the 1–2 week stage:
Beyond the practical benefits for your baby, this timing is also about protecting your peace of mind.
When babies are around 7 to 14 days old, they tend to sleep a lot and much more deeply. That means we can gently pose them, capture those curled-up details, and even sneak a sibling into frame without too much fuss. It’s hard to photograph a baby that’s kicking their way out of a wrap or flailing arms during every shutter click. And it’s even harder on Mom, who is watching it all unfold, wishing baby would just settle.
I’ve been there. I’ve stood right where you’re standing. And I promise – booking within this early window gives us the best chance of getting those timeless, cozy newborn images without the stress.
By the 3-week mark, babies can be more alert with longer periods of wakefulness. Sometimes that means stopping every 20 minutes for a feed (cluster feeding is a thing – IYKYK!!), or trying to soothe through a fussy stretch during the session. None of that is by any means a dealbreaker – we still always come away with beautiful photos. But it can raise your stress levels, especially when you’re already riding the unpredictable waves of postpartum hormones.
I’ve watched new moms feel anxious during a session wondering, “Are we going to get any?” What I want is for you to walk into my studio and be able to exhale – to know that everything’s going to be taken care of. That’s so much easier to do when baby is in that early sleepy stage.
There’s something truly special about that “brand new” newborn feel – the way babies just melt into your arms or settle into a swaddle like it’s second nature. Once you hit 3+ weeks, that little floppy, milk-drunk stage doesn’t last long. Their bodies get stronger, their reflexes sharper, and they want more say in how they’re held and positioned. We work with that, but it changes the kind of images we can create.
That dreamy, peaceful look where a baby is snuggled up in a wrap with fingers peeking out? That’s best captured early.
Sometimes families contact me after baby arrives, not realizing there’s a “perfect time” for newborn photos (or surprised that it’s so early). Please hear this: no matter your baby’s age, you haven’t missed your chance.
We’ll still get a beautiful gallery. It just may look different. I’ll always let you know what to expect, especially if we pivot to a more lifestyle approach or aim for cozy wrapped photos instead of the more posed ones. But whether your baby is 10 days or 30 days old, we’re still going to tell your family’s story honestly and beautifully.
After all, it’s about capturing the very beginning of your parenting story.
The bottom line? That 7 to 14-day sweet spot for newborn photography shouldn’t feel like a pressure – it’s about making this whole experience easier. Easier on baby. Easier on you. Imagine walking into a warm, calm studio space, knowing I’ve got wraps, outfits, and a plan for supporting the whole family. Bring a grandparent along. Let your toddler explore our kids’ space. Just let yourself be present.
And if your baby is already here and over the two-week mark? Don’t worry. Reach out, and we’ll make it work beautifully.
I’d love to help you lock in that window while you’re still deciding between bassinets and sleep sacks. Get in touch here, and let’s pencil in your due date so we can get you in during that golden newborn photo window. Your fleeting newborn days deserve to be remembered – peacefully, joyfully, and full of love.
